A few Saturdays back we headed out into the beautiful Franschhoek valley… A joyride in my loaned Ford EcoSport!
Our destination was La Bri, a wine farm just outside the village, where we had been invited to their tasting room to sample their wine and chocolate pairing…. and on arrival discovered they also offer wine and biltong tasting PLUS the most amazing cheese platters. We immediately ordered 1 of each and settled ourselves at one end of the long table.
Prior to our visit I had not really heard of La Bri before, but once we discovered this little gem I wondered why not? The outdoor seating area of the upstairs tasting room is particular picturesque and the perfect spot to enjoy wine with a view!
La Bri uses estate grapes exclusively to produce handcrafted wines, made for everyday enjoyment, comprising four single cultivar wines and two blends, based on the traditional French Bordeaux and Rhone winemaking practices.
Each La Bri wine bottle features eye catching labels with illustrations of a particular indigenous Cape flower or herb.
Another interesting fact is that La Bri is one of the oldest farms in this beautiful part of the world being on record as the first Huguenot-allocated farm in the Franschhoek Valley. It was the first of nine farms granted to members of the main group of Huguenots who sought sanctuary in the Cape in 1688! The name ‘La Bri’ is probably derived from the French for ‘the refuge’, a perfect name for this beautiful boutique wine estate that is well worth a visit.
