After our amazing morning cruising the Chobe River on a river safari we headed under the shade of the boma to enjoy a delicious buffet lunch with our very international fellow travellers (Latvia, Hungary, Israel, Zambia, Canada, Ireland, Italy et al)
Just after 2pm we headed off on our 4×4 vehicle to explore more of the Chobe National Park…
And it didn’t take long to discover it’s delights!
First up, a little tortoise taking a drink from a water hole and a family of warthog were “enjoying themselves”.
Then, just around the next bush, as our driver was merrily bouncing us along, I turned and spotted a huge lioness lying in wait mere metres from the road and called for the driver to halt!
She was clearly not too bothered about us… all her attention was on the warthogs, who weren’t paying attention!
And so we sat, in silence, and waited for what was to become one of the most exciting game viewing experiences I’ve had the privilege of watching unfold…
With our hearts in our stomachs and our breathe in our throats we watched as the lioness, and her two younger cubs a few metres away, stalked their prey.
From lying in the long grass, to twitching their ears, to focussing their gaze, to selecting their approach direction to prowling slowly forward and then, finally, giving chase. It was pure adrenalin!
Fortunately for the family of piggies, they caught wind that something was up just in time and ran, squealing, into the bushes, the lioness and her cubs unsuccessful this time.
Our route through the Chobe took us via the river we had meandered along earlier in the day, and it was amazing to see the scene from the other side…
Many animals call this piece of paradise home and we came across kudu, giraffe, buffalo, mongoose, ground hornbill and a very lazy lion during our drive.
And then we found the elephant!
Chobe National Park is home to the largest population of elephant in the world…
Out of the bushes came one, and then another, and then a whole herd of these majestic creatures crossed the road in front of us… with a baby in tow!
A fitting end to our day spent in Botswana.
